Joburg cop in court over shooting bystander
Johannesburg - A Cleveland police constable will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday for allegedly shooting dead a bystander during an arrest, the Independent Complaints Directorate said.
ICD spokesperson Moses Dlamini said the constable was arrested and charged with murder after he allegedly shot the man on Tuesday night.
"We will investigate this. We have already determined that there was no reason for the shooting. This was an innocent bystander who had nothing to do with what was going on," he said.
"The constable is appearing in court today [Wednesday], and there should be more information of the outcome later."
The constable told police that he was on the way to another crime scene when he came across a "suspicious" man near the Cleveland train station.
He put the man in the back of the police vehicle and was ordering the driver of a nearby car to lie down on the road when his gun allegedly went off.
The bystander died at the scene.
