Joburg cop's killers get life in jail

2012-05-15 13:41
Johannesburg - The killers of police Lieutenant Colonel Mark Ishlove have been sentenced to life behind bars, The Star newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Ishlove, 60, died in a shoot-out between police and a five-man gang near a primary school in Northcliff, Johannesburg on June 15 last year. Two of the gunmen died.

The three who survived were sentenced to life imprisonment by the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on Monday for his murder.

"The court is satisfied that the minimum prescribed sentence will not be unjust," Judge Naren Pandya was quoted as saying.

Happy Mokorongo, Mountain Msezane, and Joseph Mogashoa were also sentenced to 16 years on four counts of attempted murder and an additional five years for attempting to kill Warrant Officer Selby Sibanyoni, who was wounded.

Mokorongo received a further five years in jail for possessing a semi-automatic firearm.

All three received another 15 years for unlawfully possessing other firearms used in the shooting, and an additional year for possessing ammunition. The sentences would run concurrently.

They were acquitted of murdering their accomplice, who died in the shooting.
