Joburg man swims English Channel
Johannesburg - A 57-year-old Johannesburg businessman, who almost succumbed to polio as a child, this week became the 31st South African to complete the gruelling swim across the English Channel.
Richard Child swam the 40km channel in 14 hours and 33 minutes on Saturday, his spokesperson Lauren Wileman said in statement on Thursday.
Child contracted polio when he was 17-months-old, but beat the disease to become an accomplished long-distance swimmer.
"By the time I swam, I was physically fit, but the most important element is to be mentally strong.
"If you have a good team by your side to support you before and during the swim, anything is possible," said Child.
The English Channel between France and Britain, is part of the Atlantic Ocean.
