Joburg mom makes hoax bomb scare

2012-05-31 08:02

Johannesburg - A mother made a hoax bomb scare because she did not want her daughter to board a 1Time flight from Johannesburg to George, according to a report on Thursday.

When the flight landed in George on Wednesday airline officials searched for the bomb resulting in flight delays, The Star reported.

Bewildered passengers were transferred from the plane to the terminal building but did not know what was going on.

The police bomb squad were sent in to look for the bomb but nothing was found, Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Nigel Olifant told the newspaper.

The airline's CEO Blacky Komani told The Star that the call made to the call centre was traced back to the mother.

"She left a short message. She wanted to speak to the manager and when the call centre agent put her through, she said: ‘I just wanted to let you know there is a bomb in one of your aircraft’," Komani was quoted as saying.

1Time immediately notified its pilots and ordered that all flights on the ground be searched. Two flights were in the air.

It was not clear why the mother did not want her daughter to fly on the aircraft, the newspaper reported.

    Eish! Party kinders se Ma's...

      Curry - 2012-05-31 08:27

Only in SA will "There's a bomb on the plane" cause less of a stir than a painting.

      Squeegee - 2012-05-31 09:03

She is certainly going to regret it. It is a serious criminal offence.

      Bibi - 2012-05-31 09:17

@Curry: you are so right. The painting saga is still carrying on. Now there is a couple of guys who realised they did not say anything way back when and have to add their six pence worth of nonsense.

      Bonjo - 2012-05-31 09:45

Is your Mom a terrorist? Cause girl you're the bomb

      Boer - 2012-06-01 02:48

A very stupid thing to do. If they want to they could actually lock her up for making a terrorist thread.

  • JournoSergio - 2012-05-31 08:20

A bit of a selfish thing to do. Imagine the widespread fear she caused...

      Nicholas - 2012-05-31 17:01

Probably more a major irritation ..

  • Jean - 2012-05-31 08:22

All good and fine, people can make these phone call pranks but the bill of sending the squad out should be sent to them and the money lost of the company affected.

      Megan - 2012-05-31 09:42

As far as I am aware, she will more than likely be made to foot the bill of the call out. On top of that, hoax calling is a criminal offense so she should be facing criminal charges as well. Plus, the airline is certainly in the correct position to bring a civil case against this woman demanding she recovers the cost. ACSA charge huge penalties to airlines that are delayed on the apron as long as the delay has nothing to do with the actual airport.

      Jean - 2012-05-31 09:55

Well in that case I hope she has a savings account...

  • E=MC2 - 2012-05-31 08:24

  • Richard - 2012-05-31 08:29

Is the lady off her rocker how can you put all the peoples life in jepordy just because you don't want the child to fly does she know what the outcome of her stupidity can cause her

      lioneldelange - 2012-05-31 08:41

@Richard, it was wrong what she did, but please explain how she put everyone's life in jeopardy ???????

      david.baker.sa - 2012-05-31 08:49

@lioneldelange - Actually such action does increase risk. There were 2 planes in the air. In such situations pilots either divert to another airport or they speed up to their destination. This diversion or expediting could increase risk. Also Emergency gets put on alert diverting them from real crises. It is not just a nuisance. It adds to risk

      Philip - 2012-05-31 08:51

Well, imagine one of the passengers has a bad case of anxiety attacks and forgot their meds at home ... seem pretty legit to me ... Lock her up.

      stavious.mamatepa - 2012-05-31 09:08

@lioneldelange,how can u ask such a stupid question? People can panic in this kind of incidents and run for their lifes ending up stamping on each other DOMKOP...

      Richard - 2012-05-31 09:01

maybe so but hey think before you do something sily like that

      Shellerjc - 2012-05-31 09:05

Richard I Agree, But sadly there are a few moms out there who just wont allow their children to grow up & leave home. But thats just what I am assuming, who knows what the rreason was behind all of this, lets wait and see what transpires of this?

  • kasamkelo - 2012-05-31 08:35

  • bongwer - 2012-05-31 08:58

it is sad that people perpetuate this color thing whenever they comment on stuff. why can't you just voice your opinion about the issue at hand and leave the pink, purple, white, black stuff? phew! it is really a long road.

      Rob - 2012-05-31 09:32

@bongwar....Because we are black, white, indian & coloured in this fantastic country of mixed cultures & diversity. The ANC reminds us of this everyday.

      Megan - 2012-05-31 09:53

Bongwer, unfortunately there will always be morons! I honestly believe that when someone brings up race in an article like this (lets face it, this article has absolutely nothing to do with colour) they are only doing it to spark a reaction. And one of our MAJOR problems is, we're too quick to take the bait. These people are nothing but trolls. Probably doing it deliberately without actually meaning anything they actually say. All we need to do is ignore them, if people really feel offended then instead of saying something that just exacerbates the situation, click on the little link that says "report comment" and when you next come on to check, the offensive comment is gone...

  • Gregory - 2012-05-31 08:58

She should have said there was a spear on one of the planes.

  • Shelley - 2012-05-31 09:42

Oh dear - it's just dawned on me, can you imagine the humiliation the daughter must be going thru? Can you just imagine when and if people should find out who she is? She will always have that.... Oh you are the girl who's mom called the airlines with a bomb threat? OMG - How humiliating for her!!! LOL

  • Janice - 2012-05-31 09:45

My nephew {16} made a joke saying there were drugs in his bag, Oh my, was he in HUGE trouble!

  • bareng - 2012-05-31 09:53

I think this white and black comments thing is getting out of hand, even neutral articles that have nothing to do with race we still see unnecessary race-driven comments. scary! But anyway, I think the poor woman would have saved herself getting into problems by convincing her daughter to fly with another brand since she seem to have known that the daughter was going to fly anyway.

  • Eidel - 2012-05-31 09:56

    Will people never learn....

  • Loo - 2012-05-31 10:12

LOL . .ai .. imagine that daughter wanting to get married ??? Mother in law from hell.

    What a dumb woman

  • HendrikAfrika - 2012-05-31 12:34

No need for the mother to scare the passengers, they are already afraid of having to fly on the airline

  • tobydt - 2012-05-31 13:04

I got falsely arrested for making a "bomb threat". I said I dropped a bomb in the auditorium :P
