Joburg to get fraction of parking money

2012-05-08 09:23
Johannesburg - The City of Johannesburg will get 20 to 40% of the income generated from kerbside parking, Business Day reported on Tuesday.

The percentage would depend on whether the suburb had the potential for higher or lower income. The remainder of the money would go to contractor Ace Parking.

The kerbside parking was already running in Braamfontein and the Johannesburg CBD. It would spread to Norwood, Melville, Brixton, Emmarentia, Rosebank, Roodepoort, Birnam, Parkview, Sandton, Florida, Fordsburg, Greenside, Linden, Rivonia, Craighall Park and Northcliff on June 1.

It would cost R8 an hour and increase to R8.50 by July 1.

Many of the businesses in these suburbs had slid into decline in recent years, and residents and business owners claimed the introduction of paid parking was going to chase customers away.
