Johannesburg baboon still not found

2012-04-12 12:23
Johannesburg - A baboon roaming the south of Johannesburg had not been found by Thursday morning, said the Johannesburg SPCA.

"The baboon is still missing. At this time, we don't know where he is," said Johannesburg Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) chief executive Dirk van Niekerk.

"The area he is moving around in is about 1 000 ha, so it won't be easy to find him," he said.

The baboon, which is apparently injured, has been sighted between Bassonia and Meyersdal.
Van Niekerk said a positive factor was that the area was not densely populated.

"We have people in the area that will be in touch with us if they see him," he said.

Lyall Meistre, the owner of Vega Monitoring, said he had sent people in search of the baboon on Thursday.

Staff at Meistre's off-site monitoring company sighted the baboon at a complex in Bassonia on Saturday. Its movements were recorded on closed circuit television cameras.

The primate was sighted again on Wednesday in Meyersdal, about two kilometres from Bassonia.

At the time, Vega business development manager Carmen Terino said the baboon looked like a male and was huge.

"It looks like he could be injured. It seems that he is distressed and disorientated, and you can see he is lost and doesn't know what to do," she said.
