Johannesburg - A Soweto taxi driver was hijacked and shot on Tuesday morning, Gauteng police said.
Also on Tuesday morning, in a separate incident, a Soweto man was arrested for the rape of a 19-year-old woman the night before.
"The man was driving a taxi early in the morning when he was shot at and his taxi taken away," Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.
The driver was shot three times in his upper body.
Empty cartridges
He was left on the street in Mofolo North, where residents called for help.
"Police responded very quickly, and they followed the taxi to Meadowlands, where the hijackers jumped out and ran away," he said.
Three empty cartridges, from a 9mm firearm, were recovered at the scene of the crime.
A case of hijacking and attempted murder had been opened.
Makhubela appealed to the public to contact the police, on 011 527 7000, with any information about the crime.
Rape
On Monday night, a Soweto woman was abducted and raped by a man she knew.
"A 19-year-old girl was in Zola 3, when a known man to her grabbed her," said Makhubela.
The woman was taken to the man's shack, threatened with a knife and raped.
"After the rape she came straight to the police station," said Makhubela.
She led police to the place where she had been abducted, and a 31-year-old man was arrested.
He would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of rape and abduction.
