Johannesburg - A Johannesburg metro police officer was shot dead in Pimville, Soweto, on Tuesday morning, metro police said.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the officer was killed near Pimville stadium while on his way to work.

"He was shot seven times. His firearm has been stolen," said Minnaar.

"Investigations continue into what happened... This is the second incident in four days."

Last week, a traffic officer was killed in a shooting at the intersection of Bruce Street and Empire Road in Hillbrow.

Lieutenant Colonel Tshisikhwawe Ndou said the shooting happened on Friday when the traffic police stopped a minibus taxi at around 17:00 and the taxi driver pulled out a gun and shot one of the officers.

Ndou said that after the shooting, the taxi driver ran into a nearby flat and police back-up was called.

A man was arrested in possession of a 9mm pistol.
