John Block manipulated tenders - report

2012-07-27 10:40

Johannesburg - Northern Cape ANC leader John Block manipulated tenders for his own enrichment, according to a report on Friday.

According to an affidavit to investigators by former Kimberley hospital chief executive Hamid Shabbir, Block pressured provincial health officials into manipulating tenders, the Mail and Guardian newspaper reported on Friday.

Hamid left the country in 2009. Block's fraud and corruption trial was postponed to April 2013 earlier this year.

Block, former Sol Plaatje mayor Patrick Lenyibi, municipal manager Frank Mashilo and chief financial officer Nandipha Madiba faced charges of fraud, corruption and contravening the Municipal Finance Management Act.

Facing the same charges are Intaka Holdings director and Uruguayan businessman Gaston Savoi and the company's industrial director Fernando Praderi.

The charges relate to the awarding of multi-million rand tenders to supply water purification plants and oxygen generating units to provincial hospitals.

Hamid told investigators that Savoi had bribed him, and that he received R3.2m in kickbacks through a front company.

Hamid said he first met Block back in 2001 at the hospital. Block had been involved in a vehicle accident.

Hamid, who is living in Pakistan, has not been arrested or charged. He made his statement to investigators who visited him in Abu Dhabi in February 2011.

tell us something we don't constantly hear for a change.

      gary.guy.507 - 2012-07-27 11:02

The real tragedy about this, is the ANC keep going on about tackling corruption, yet this guy gets re-elected recently. ANC - you are judge on your actions and not on what you say ... and in the court of public opinion you are a bunch of thieves, in fact orgainzed crime no different to the mafia or drug cartels.

      oneant.kasinski - 2012-07-27 11:04

when corruption is a component of a population segments culture, you WILL constantly hear it. Contrary to popular belief, ethics and integrity is actually worth more than ill gained wealth in the long run. I just find it hilarious that these clowns dont realize this.

This man deserves a higher position, he is clearly an ANC man through and through, either promotion or suspension for many years on full pay is the penalty for his crimes.

      richard.gouws.9 - 2012-07-27 13:09

When they steel they steel big.........just shows how stupid they are. Not a couple of thousand here or there but R3.2m......Obviously he will be caught. Now that he is found guilty they will have to find him new post within the ANC as this is a norm..........

  • musamuskid - 2012-07-27 12:31

The joke, this clown has just been re-elected, amazing what they do for self enrichment, whilst other people are battling to make ends meet. Seems we should all turn to crime, you get well fed, dont have to pay for essential services, dont have to worry about the price of food or petrol increasing, you get good medical service and you get to watch tv. You dont even have to do a solid days work. CRIME PAYS HONESTY GETS YOU NOTHING.
