Journalist held for assault

2012-03-05 19:50

Johannesburg - A journalist has been arrested in Motswedi, in North West, after apparently hitting his wife with a hammer and pouring paraffin over her, police said on Monday.

He did not set the paraffin alight, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

A fight broke out between them when the wife arrived home late on Saturday, said Ngubane.

She suffered head injuries and was taken to a local hospital. She had since been discharged.

Ngubane said the woman apparently attended a stokvel meeting that night with the knowledge of her husband, but he accused her of infidelity.

The journalist was arrested on Sunday. Police were investigating a case of attempted murder.

He was expected to appear in the Motswedi Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
