Johannesburg - Claims have surfaced that a journalist may have interfered as police tried to negotiate with two men on a suicide mission in Port Elizabeth, police said on Tuesday.

Police spent hours negotiating with the father and his 19-year-old son on Monday, after they entered a Seaview pharmacy and demanded they be given deadly injections to kill themselves.

"I can confirm that there are allegations that a journalist had interfered with the negotiations," said police spokesperson Stanley Jarvis.

He would not comment on the nature of the interruptions.

The SABC, however, reported that the freelance journalist had held telephonic conversations with the father and son amid police attempts to end their suicide mission.

Jarvis said: "The general has asked for an investigation and he has asked for it to be conducted in such a way that if it did happen, it should not be repeated again."

The father and son released the pharmacy staff on Monday afternoon, after they were handed tranquilliser injections which they thought were lethal.

Several hours later, police managed to get into the pharmacy and arrest them.
