Cape Town - The body of an experienced journalist and former news editor has been found in his house in Hermanus.

Ian Theron, 56, a former Beeld and Huisgenoot news editor, had reportedly been ill but had not gone to hospital as he was supposed to, said a neighbour in Beeld.

Theron and his life partner, Mike van der Merwe, moved to Hermanus in 2005.

Van der Merwe died in 2012 due to brain cancer and friends said Theron had been struggling to get over Van der Merwe’s death.

“I think Ian literally grieved to death over Mike and I know he was sometimes terribly lonely,” said former colleague and friend, Terésa Coetzee.

Neighbour Petrovna Metelerkamp said Theron had been ill for a while and had looked “very poorly” when she had last seen him a week ago.

Theron had apparently stopped answering his phone on Friday and security guards on Tuesday broke a window in his house to gain access to the property.

His body was found on his bed.

The cause of death has not yet been established.
