Johannesburg - The family of Molemo Jub Jub Maarohanye has denied claims that the disgraced hip-hop artist tried to commit suicide in prison, The Star reported on Friday.

He will spend his first Christmas behind bars after being sentenced to an effective 25 years' imprisonment after four schoolchildren were killed in Soweto in 2010 when he was involved in a drag racing accident.

Maarohanye's family said the fact that he could appeal against his sentence, gave him hope.

"I don’t even want to entertain that [suicide rumour] because the boy knows there is a lot to be done and that there is still hope,” said Mogosi Moleko, Maarohanye’s uncle.

Maarohanye is serving his time in Johannesburg Prison.
