Jurie Els drops off the radar

Cape Town - A close friend of Jurie Els and his wife, Hestrie, was concerned about the well-being of the apparently beleaguered glamour couple who recently moved to New Zealand.

Manie Lemmer, a fitness specialist who grew up in Lichtenburg in Northwest and knew Hestrie well, said he was worried about the couple because he had not been in contact with them since they moved. Die Burger was also unable to contact them.

Els brought a successful interdict against Media24 about a planned article in Huisgenoot and You in which pop star Robbie Klay talked about "the uncle" who molested him when he was younger.

It remained an open question who this person was.

More legal advice

Klay performed on Saturday at a baby competition at a Pretoria mall for the first time since telling his story.

His fiancée, Laetitia Bouwer, said Klay would continue with his career and keep on singing.

Die Burger earlier reported that Klay was informed by "the uncle's" attorney that a letter was on its way, but Bouwer said they had not received it yet.

She said Klay had obtained legal advice and will probably do so again.

Meanwhile Die Burger did not know whether Els would return to South Africa to gag more media.

Several Sunday publications reported on the story after the publication of censored versions of Huisgenoot and You.

These two magazines have a combined readership of about four million - almost as much as the whole population of New Zealand.

The Els couple's emigration was apparently forced by crime and standard of service delivery in South Africa.

According to a legal specialist, it was not necessary for Els to be in South Africa to bring applications or start legal action here.

jannie.beirowski says... If Malema is so unhappy with the thinking and actions, or non-actions of his higher organ, why does he not step out and form his own party? May it be because he knows his backing is very little and just a few noise-makers who will not survive in an election? Is he hoping to get the silent vote of the established voters of the ANC by them supporting the ANC and thereby supporting him? It makes you think, does it not? Read the article...
