KFC apologises for racist anthem

2012-06-29 11:22

Cape Town - Chicken outlet KFC has apologised for an offensive version of the national anthem that was played in one of its shops in Cape Town.

"[We] have implemented immediate and decisive disciplinary action against two rogue employees involved," the company said on Friday.

The ANC in the Western Cape asked for an investigation into the matter on Thursday.

Capetonian Tariq Mellett was reportedly shocked when, while buying chicken at KFC, he heard a "vulgar, profane" version of the national anthem blasted over the music system.

"It sounded like parts of the national anthem, but I was surprised when the song started in Afrikaans with: Nkosi Sikelel'... Nkosi is 'n doos, Mandela is 'n fokken kaffir... and so on, at full blast," he said.

KFC said this was an "isolated incident".

"KFC condemns racism in the strongest possible terms and apologises unreservedly for the offence this has caused," the company said.

Good, they should be hit with a million rand fine

      deabreu - 2012-06-29 11:41

I had KFC last night, zinger box with 4 zinger wings, a zinger burger, chips, a side and a coke for R50 or so. It was very nice. Yummies. Fattening heart disease, with plenty of cancerous MSG, but ohhh sooo very very nice! Mouth watering.

      Squeegee - 2012-06-29 11:48

ANC will accept apology. If they were to boycott KFC the ANC would starve.

      rob.baggaley - 2012-06-29 11:51

Now perhaps the ANC will apologise as well for their 18 years of disgraceful " leadership " and the almost weekly exposure of their corrupt appointees / Cadre's. And for their inability to control crime, which has resulted in the deaths of thousands, during this period as well.

      DanielDennett - 2012-06-29 12:00

Tsotsi white people live under democracy all over the world it's old news for us, unless you have your own idea of democracy.

      Squeegee - 2012-06-29 12:06

WOW! News24 has a picture of KFC. Glad we didn't get a rusted wheel or bird droppings or an antenna or one of the usual nonsensical photos with the article.

      rob.baggaley - 2012-06-29 12:21

      The new " struggle " song....Kill the chicken....kill the egg !

      zambezi.river - 2012-06-29 12:35

Where can I get a copy from

      arthur.hugh - 2012-06-29 17:26

Google Shane Mc Callaghan - apparently he's a comedian who wrote it a few years back.

  • vernon.samuel.7 - 2012-06-29 11:31

Would it be possible for KFC to teach government how to do an acceptable apology? Especially angie, the (hopefully ex-) minister of basic education. Somehow their apologies are always sub-texted with shifting of blame and pointing of fingers. How refreshing to hear a proper apology and see immediate corrective action.

      vernon.samuel.7 - 2012-06-29 12:01

Tsotsi-baby!!! I just read my comment 3 times and cannot see ANC referenced in there once. All that anger, all that frustration, all that violence - and not an ounce of intelligence to match!!! Pity.

      DanielDennett - 2012-06-29 12:06

He's talking about serious issues that affect our people in the present and will have an impact on them in the future. Maybe you can approach the Olympic comittee and a new discipline can be introduced where we can compete for the most offended people on earth catagory, you're definately going for gold.

      Cedric - 2012-06-29 12:10

dis tsotsi lad is loosing it nd if ANC where behaving nd acting in a proper manner then there was no need for it to be mentioned in so many ways.

      loading123 - 2012-06-29 13:19

Power to the people, did you say? Since when is that whilst ANC is in power? All I see is a lot of service delivery protests. How's that power working for you , people? Or are the ANC still ignoring you?

  • E=MC2 - 2012-06-29 11:35

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-29 12:00

The song is of the same calibre as their food. Total rubbish. If it made fun of the Afrikaners the ANC wouldn't be investigating, that's for sure.

      Spot on !

      stanley.marries - 2012-06-29 12:59

  • BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-06-29 13:12

Glad there was an apology, and I hope the people responsible are disciplined. And, I still say, don't act so shocked ANC - you started this 'hate song' business so live with it.

  • jaysonpaul.beckwith - 2012-06-29 13:12

Apology not good enough,,now we all want a KFC street wize 2 and don't forget the t-shirt.

  • emile.vanrayner.7 - 2012-06-29 13:21

i dont think people need to get too worked up about this... we are all quite aware that racism is still an issue. kfc apologised. the matter has been resolved. lets not turn this simple matter into another pedestal to throw insults at the govt from. that gets done almost everywhere else. cant we just read the news? just for once?

we don't even know who made the song or played it,so why all the surmising

  • nikkinix88 - 2012-06-29 13:49

I don't understand why most of you are blaming KFC. They didn't tell the employees to play the song over the loud speaker. It was an act by individuals and the unfortunate thing is that it happened in the KFC store. KFC has taken action against these employees which is more than ANC did after Julius got carried away with his songs. Almost every article will somehow change into racism. Unfortunately our country doesn't know where to draw the line and rather blames everything on racism as it is the easiest target. Well done KFC for taking action against these employees and giving a public apology and so quickly after the incident as well.

  • lawrence.masoes - 2012-06-29 14:49

People of Cape Town is officially the MOST racist on planet Earth, followed by the Polish and the Ukranians. What they don't realize they are creating Apartheid laagers for their kids to grow up in, and which will eventually give in, like the PW Botha regime.

      rob.baggaley - 2012-06-29 15:08

Really ! Because the majority didnt vote the cANCer in ? Bloody racist fools. Dont know what they are missing :)

  • antin.herinck - 2012-06-29 15:45

Hmmm, am in two minds about this one. Whilst for me the anthem can be absolutely used for political satire -no holy cow at all, the lyrics as given here are lacking a lot in sophistication. Can't they do better than that? Hell, play a good one there and I may start to like this ANC-feeding trough myself.

  • dieanderou - 2012-06-29 15:59

Shane's CD has been on the market for years... heard it in Delmas once at a braai. They should lock that guy up, ban his terrible music and prosecute every dumb racist idiot that paid money for it.

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-06-29 17:08

Hey guys! I asked why the "K" and the "F" were allowed in KFC, and my comment was removed! So it seems these letters are now banned from KFC. In future just ask for "C".

      tanya.mare.9 - 2012-06-29 18:02

I used to think news24 forums were a platform of great tactful debates, but this is normally quickly negated by just reading the first few comments of any story, we are a nation that needs healing big time, every race group in S.A is on the edge, it doesn't matter the article could be about fat cakes or air conditioning in offices, all of them end up emotional and revolving around race.

  • patrick.makgeledise - 2012-06-29 20:46

Whoeva thot dat racism in this country is no more, dats a blatant lie. Oneday we goin t kill each other overths. Cant we forgt about ths, cos we are all human beings, da nly thn dat makes us difrnt is da language, of which we cn learn, n speak. So stop it

  • brendon.nel.7 - 2012-06-30 08:39

Kfc couldve played it at every outlet and it prob would'nt have made a differance. And let's face it. Do's anybody seriously believe a boycott on a fried chicken outlet would work?

  • charles.kubhayi.9 - 2012-08-13 10:08

It must be established who composed this song and who brought it to KFC.This matter must be brought to the attention of all South Africans to know how cruel is the composer and must pay for the damages made to the public and our beloved leader(Mandela). The mandela foundation must now be at the forefront in protecting any racist to use the name of Mandela to achieve their racist goals.

  • angela.nair.3 - 2012-12-16 14:04

Find the culprits! Let them feel the full might of the law. Its all very well for us to air our comments in the media etc. Blatant racism should not be tolerated. We should not condone it - them today and us tomorrow! Coming from a racist past has taught me to fight a fair war. I air my likes and dislikes whenever I feel like it - but racism? Never! The "K" word (excuse me K for Coolie as well - still cant understand how the K got in there?) should not be allowed - it has an ugly hurtful past attached to it. I can laugh as good as the next guy at little racist innuendos - its good to laugh at ourselves sometimes - but this KFC one is ugly and demoralising - and our national anthem nogal.....

  • pamella.sigidi - 2012-12-16 14:11

oh please management putting it off as an isolated incident. probably been playing the damn song all along. there is no place for people that dont want to move forward in our society. and people commenting that is about about ANC wake up wont you.
