Durban - A KwaZulu-Natal MEC has come under fire for spending about R4m on vehicles over the past four years, it has been reported.

Former provincial agriculture and environmental affairs, Meshack Radebe, told The Mercury that the vehicles had been bought for his staff.

In 2011 the department spent R1.4m on five vehicles while R833 000 was spent last year on an Audi A3 FSI and two VW Amarok TDI vehicles.

A BMW X5 was also bought for R869 618.

The DA’s Francois Rodgers told the newspaper the figures were “alarming” because Radebe’s department spent three times more than the arts and culture and finance departments.
Radebe defended himself by saying that his office had a large support staff who needed vehicles for their jobs.

Radebe was removed from the provincial executive this week and made deputy speaker of the provincial legislature.
