Durban - Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife chief executive Khulani Mkhize has been suspended pending an investigation into alleged drunken driving, the Witness reported on Tuesday.
He was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when he crashed a car during the organisation's board tour to Tembe Elephant Park in June.
Mkhize allegedly "disappeared" with a rented vehicle during the tour. The car, rented from Avis in Pietermaritzburg, was later found crashed.
An internal investigation would also focus on Mkhize's alleged failure to report the accident.
Agriculture and Environmental Affairs MEC Mtholephi Mthimkhulu announced at a media briefing on Tuesday that he had put Mkhize on "special leave effective from June 27, until further notice".
Mthimkhulu said the suspension would allow for the investigation to take place.
