KZN attorney appears for fraud

2012-02-09 17:57
Durban - An attorney appeared in the Durban Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday for allegedly lodging fraudulent road accident claims of about R3.7m, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Naleni Atwaru, 40, was released on R5 000 bail and her case postponed to March 2, Colonel Vincent Mdunge said.

The Pietermaritzburg attorney was arrested with her mother-in-law and mother for allegedly lodging claims with the Road Accident Fund (RAF) for an accident that never happened.

Mdunge said the woman was not arrested with her three children, as police had said earlier.

The two other women appeared in the Point Periodical Court in Durban on Thursday on fraud charges. They were given free bail and the matter was postponed to February 17.

The attorney's mother's case was struck off the roll because of her age.

The accused were charged with fraud for claims dating back three years.
