2012-02-29 22:42
Pietermaritzburg - A KwaZulu-Natal man was jailed for 20 years by the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday for killing his fiancée's three-year-old son.

Emmanuel Mgenge, 42, said he argued with his fianc, Sindi, over the phone and she threatened to have him killed.

She also said she would give the child to him. Mgenge said he was angry because she had been unfaithful to him and kept his lobola down payment.

"I thought how Sindi had treated me and lost my temper. I took a knife and slit Nzuzo Nqashi's throat," he said.

Mgenge handed himself over to police on the day of the murder.

State advocate Dheelan Naidoo said the child had trusted Mgenge, who had transferred his anger at his fiancée to the boy. It was a very personal attack as he had to pull the child's head back to expose the throat.

Judge Rishi Seegobin said murder was the worst crime against a person, and it was made more shocking and disturbing by the fact that the victim was a child.
