Johannesburg - The Vryheid Regional Court on Friday sentenced rapist Xolani Zulu to 11 years in jail, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
Captain Thulani Zwane said the 22-year-old was given eight years for the rape of an 8-year-old child, and another three years for the attempted rape of a 9-year-old.
In 2006, the two children had been playing in the yard outside their home in Mondlo, near Vryheid, when Zulu, their neighbour, called one of the girls to go to his house.
After he had raped her, he threatened her not to tell anyone. He then called the other child, but she screamed and ran off.
The children only reported the incident in 2008, after a crime awareness campaign was conducted at their school.
Zulu was arrested in 2008, and held in prison while the Vryheid Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit investigated the case.
