Johannesburg - A KwaZulu-Natal police constable and a civilian have been shot dead in their car in Umlazi in Durban, police said on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Jay Naicker said their bodies were found in the vehicle in the morning.

"Constable Sizwe Mhlongo, 26, was found dead at the driver's seat. His passenger, an unidentified male in his 20s, was also dead. Both men had sustained gunshot wounds," Naicker said.

Naicker said residents heard gunshots near the Umlazi Secondary School on Monday night, but were too scared to investigate.

Mhlongo's service pistol was found on the scene and forensics tests were being done to establish whether it was used in the shooting.

"At this stage we do not wish to speculate and will await the results of the post mortem and ballistic investigation to give us a clear picture as to what could have occurred," Naicker said.

An inquest and murder docket have been opened.
