Durban - A Bergville councillor, allegedly nabbed with 41kg of dagga, has yet to be suspended or disciplined.

On Wednesday, Okhahlamba local municipality speaker Gertrude Ndaba told News24 the relevant "processes still need to take place".

"I can confirm he was indeed arrested. However, no action has been taken against him as yet. This is South Africa and we cannot take a decision until a full investigation can be completed," she said.

When contacted for comment, the African National Congress councillor, Cyprian Zondo, 33, declined to comment, saying speaking to the media would not be "prudent" at this stage.

"There is an ongoing investigation and court case and I feel this must conclude before I can say anything," he said.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed the arrest.

“He was arrested for possession of 41kg of dagga with an estimated street value of R82 000.

"He was nabbed in a stop-and-search operation in Ladysmith on September 2. After behaving suspiciously, his vehicle was searched and the dagga found in five large plastic bags," Zwane said.

Zondo was granted R4 000 bail and is set to appear in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on September 28.
