KZN couple arrested for child abuse

2012-02-29 18:23
Durban - A Durban couple has been arrested for allegedly physically abusing their six-year-old daughter, police said on Wednesday.

"They were arrested on Monday when they went to visit their daughter in Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital," Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge said.

The 6-year-old child was allegedly raped in a school toilet in Durban on February 14.

When she was admitted to hospital police noticed that she had scars and bruises on her face and body.

"She claimed that her injuries were the result of her stepmother scratching her with her long fingernails and assaulting her," Mdunge said.

The girl's 28-year-old father and 27-year-old stepmother had been charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

They were expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Mdunge said the rape was still under investigation.
