Pietermaritzburg - A driver who failed to stop after causing an accident that injured two cyclists was arrested in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

"The 21-year-old man was arrested on Thursday in New Holmes, Pietermaritzburg for reckless and negligent driving and failure to stop after an accident," said Colonel Jay Naicker.

The driver allegedly hit the cyclists on Thursday morning along the M13 in Fields Hill near Kloof, Pinetown.

He reported the accident to the Hillcrest police station, describing it as minor.

Naicker said one of the cyclists, a 28-year-old woman, was in a serious condition in hospital with head injuries.

Her companion, a 62-year-old man, was discharged from hospital soon after the accident.

The number plate of the driver's vehicle was recovered from the accident scene and traced to Pietermaritzburg.

"The driver's vehicle was recovered on the premises of a panel beater with damages in the front, windscreen and roof."

He was expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court later on Friday.

Minor incident = damage to front, windscreen and roof? He probably only reported it so he could claim insurance!

My thoughts exactly!!! Regardless of the outcome, if you have or cause an accident, you ALWAYS stop! Im personally no fan of cyclists, but still!!!

I agree - and only AFTER he had sobered up.....

Only reason he reported it is he realized that he had lost his number plate and now they would be able to trace him.

South Africa is rife with cowards. Hit and runs are commonplace.

Lets guess, its an Indian fella

Ivan, I hear you and although this is classed as racial profiling the stats are there... Two cyclists were KILLED in Durban in the cycling lane by a drunk Indian coming from the casino... when the cops traced him he was in the panel beaters already having his car resprayed. Not so long ago another Indian driver (drunk) smashed into a group of cyclists on the M13, another time on the old Umhlanga Rocks road, again only for the cops to find him in a panel beater covering his tracks... It's a problem, a big problem in Durban... I am not saying htat Indians are bad drivers, it is a frightening statistic though.. Please guys, don't drink and drive, especially early in the morning when you go "fishing".

And the blue light driver who put a 16 year old student into a coma is also still driving around out there without having been charged either.

The colour of the person's skin has nothing to do with the crime. We have a white man murdering his step son. We have a colored mother murdering her young child. We have a black person killing cyclists while driving drunk. As diverse as the successes of the people of this country, so diverse is the criminals. Lets focus on the crime and stop making everything a race issue. The importance is that the punishment must fit the crime and sadly in South Africa we have lost all sense of right and wrong. Justice is figment of our imagination and we all long the day when we will see these criminals (regardless of the colour of their skin), sentenced appropriately and taken off the streets.

Hopefully, jailtime for him. Hope the woman recovers well and the older man copes with the trauma
