Johannesburg - Six security guards have been arrested for attempted murder after a shooting in uMhlathuze in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

Captain Thulani Zwane said the shooting was triggered by an argument between two security guards on Wednesday. One of them produced a firearm and shot and wounded the other.

The wounded guard's five colleagues retaliated by opening fire on the shooter, wounding him. The two wounded men were taken to hospital.

Zwane said the first shooter was under police guard as he was facing attempted murder charges. The five men who shot at him were also arrested.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the argument between the guards working for the Empangeni and Ngwelezani taxi associations. The six would appear in the Empangeni Magistrate's Court soon.
