Pietermaritzburg - The Miss South Africa hopefuls who hail from KwaZulu-Natal have said it would be an honour to represent their province at the national pageant.

Part of a preliminary group of 25 women selected from across the country, the four KZN beauties are hoping to be among the final 12 who make the cut and compete for the Miss South Africa 2016 crown in March next year at Sun City.

Kerusha Govender (25), who grew up in Westville, Durban, but now lives in Johannesburg working as a legal adviser for football club Mamelodi Sundowns said, “I never planned for this to happen. It is just one of those things you tell yourself you really need to try. This year I finally got the courage to enter as I had more confidence in myself.”

From Umhlanga, Lezel Birkenstock (22), who is studying towards a degree in business management and marketing at Stellenbosch University, said representing KZN “is such a huge honour” .

“I entered because I wanted to show other girls that you don’t have to be ‘girly girl’ to be in the competition. I am sporty and I have always been involved in sport. This will be a great opportunity to show women that anything is possible if you have confidence in yourself.”

Pinetown-born Shanine Smith (23), who holds a degree in geological sciences, admitted this was not the first time she has entered the pageant

“It is the first time I have made it this far. It feels unreal. This year I had more confidence in myself and I feel ready. The support my family has for me gave me the strength to try again.”

The Top 25 are expected to make their first public appearance in support of the fight against breast cancer at the Cell C Playing for Pink Ladies Invitational Polo, being held at the Inanda Club on Sunday.

Attempts to reach the fourth KZN contestant, Zinhle Nkonyane (24) from Phongola, were unsuccessful yesterday
