Johannesburg - The search continues for a man who went missing in KwaZulu-Natal after he was apparently hijacked, police said on Thursday.
Captain Thulani Zwane said a special task team was deployed to investigate after the hijacking in Hillcrest, outside Durban.
"We cannot reveal any further information at this stage as the case is still under investigation," he said.
The Witness newspaper identified the missing man as 52-year-old Leon van Rensburg.
The paper reported that the IT specialist sent an SMS to his 15-year-old daughter, Megan, at 10:41 on Tuesday, saying: "Help, hijacked."
Megan's cellphone was off at the time as she was still at school and she only received the message hours later.
Abandoned car
Comments on the Cato Manor organised crime unit Facebook page said the distress SMS was triangulated to a cellphone tower in New Germany, said the paper.
However, this could not be officially confirmed by the police.
According to The Witness, Van Rensburg's white Toyota Tazz was later found abandoned in Kokstad, almost 200km from where he was last seen.
His family told the paper they were desperate for answers.
"I just want to know where my dad is," Van Rensburg's 23-year-old son Graham was quoted as saying.
"The past two days have been a mess - an absolute roller-coaster, with everyone phoning me all the time. It’s hectic. "
The paper reported that the vehicle was being kept at a Kokstad police station, where forensic tests were being conducted.
