KZN induna murdered

2012-07-10 19:56

Johannesburg - A KwaZulu-Natal induna (headman) has been found murdered, Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willie Mchunu said on Tuesday.

It was the third murder of a public official in a week, he said.

Expressing his concern, Mchunu called on political parties to keep their members under control.

"They must make sure that they preach peace, stability and calmness to their members to avoid incidents of this nature," he said.

Mchunu said the induna, from Vryheid-Ngenetsheni, was found shot in his head by his family who went looking for him when he did not return after going to fetch his cows.

Last week, a National Freedom Party official was shot dead in his car while on his way to collect firewood with his two children in Nquthu, outside Dundee.

ANC regional leader Wandile Mkhize was shot dead outside his home on the South Coast last Saturday.

He and his friend Nhlakanipho Ntshangase were walking along a road in Margate when they were shot at by gunmen in a car Ntshangase was wounded.

At Mkhize's funeral in Port Shepstone on Sunday, President Jacob Zuma said he was concerned about the continued murders of ANC leaders in KwaZulu-Natal. Last year, ANC councillors Wiseman Mshibe and Sbu Sibiya were shot dead.

Zuma appealed to all ANC members "to be vigilant" as it seemed there were still "some forces of darkness who are bent on dividing our movement and creating mistrust".

Mchunu has called for an urgent meeting of the multi-political party oversight committee to discuss the killings.

"I would like to condemn these unnecessary and barbaric killings and further send my deepest condolences to the family members and friends of the deceased," he said.
