KZN 'killers' to try for bail

2012-03-28 20:36
Durban - Three men accused of hijacking and killing a 42-year-old motorist are expected to apply for bail in the Scottburgh Magistrate's Court next month, police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge said the three appeared in court on Tuesday in connection with the death of Soomeshan Govender.

Govender's body was found on the N2 near Scottburgh early on Saturday.

Mdunge said police initially thought he might have been the victim of a hit-and-run accident.

He was identified later, when his relatives went to report him missing.

Unbeknown to police in Scottburgh, the eThekweni metro police had arrested John Phineas Vezi in Isipingo for receiving stolen property - the Volkswagen Polo that belonged to Govender.

The vehicle was then impounded.

Mdunge said it appeared Govender was hijacked in Park Rynie, near Scottburgh, and that his body was thrown into the fast lane of the N2.

Police arrested two other men in connection with the hijacking, Sihle Nzimande, 29, and Bongani Mnguni, 29.

All three faced charges of hijacking and murder with aggravating circumstances. Vezi faced an additional charge of receiving stolen goods.
