KZN nature body told to fund itself

2012-09-28 14:19

Durban - Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has been told by the government that it has to operate independently, the Mercury reported on Friday.

The wildlife agency receives an annual budget of over R500m from the provincial government and employs over 2 500 people.

Ezemvelo was hauled before the KwaZulu-Natal parliamentary committee on finance on Thursday to explain how it would achieve self-sufficiency.

The nature conservation agency was under pressure to operate independently as other departments like health and education needed more resources to deliver services.

Ezemvelo chief executive Bandile Mkhize told the finance committee that the agency had set itself an objective of generating revenue of R193m in 2012/2013 compared with R177m generated in 2011/2012.

World-renowned conservationist Ian Player criticised the government saying he had never heard "such nonsense in all his life".

"There is no country in the world that I know which has national parks that run without government funding," Player said.

Chief executive of the Wildlands Conservation Trust Andrew Venter said the move would affect all conservation agencies as they all fell under the state.

It is just a scam to get rid of the administration and management so that the indigenous bush people can invade the conservation areas. That is Africa for you.....

"The nature conservation agency was under pressure to operate independently as other departments like health and education needed more resources to deliver services." More like - The Ministers of Health and Education need more money to steal. These two departments must be some of the most poorly run and admistered in the country and the government wants to throw more money at them. Why the f#$@ can't they become self sufficient!!???

The government has just signed the death warrant for the remaining rhinos in KZN parks. How can the park employ ranger patrols and security measures without government funding?

But His Royal Idiot, the king of the Zulus, gets R30m plus every year to dress up like a toy soldier that looks like Michael Jackson in drag. AND he still wants more to house his eighth wife in her own palace! Who elects these bozos to government and how do their bluddy muddy minds work? Or do they?

Does this mean that South African National Parks will also be without government budget? Ezimvelo as an organisation is older than SAN Parks.
