Johannesburg - Two Durban doctors have been charged with medical aid fraud amounting to R3.5m for allegedly submitting false claims, according to reports on Sunday.
Dr Anez Awath-Behari, 38, and her ex-husband Dr Mahendra Pramchand, 42, were arrested on Monday, The Mercury reported.
They appeared in the Durban Commercial Crime Court on the same day and were each granted R60 000 bail. According to The Mercury the pair have been charged with multiple counts of fraud and contravening the Medical Schemes Act.
According to the charge sheet, Behari is a representative of the Prydon Clinic, an alcohol and drug abuse treatment centre in Phoenix, Durban.
They would allegedly admit patients for lengthy treatments when, the State alleges, they only stayed for a few days. The clinic would then send the bills for the lengthy stays to medical aids Polmed, a medical aid for the police, and Bonitas.
The claims in question were made for “hospitalisations” during 2007 and 2008.
The couple would appear in court again in June.
