Durban - A man was killed and two others injured when two trucks collided on the N2 near Mtunzini on the KZN North Coast on Monday.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst said paramedics had rushed to the scene in the early hours of the morning.

He said both trucks appeared to have been travelling in the same direction when one slammed into the back of the other which had slowed to approach a tollgate.

“When medics got to the scene they found the mangled cab of the rear truck still wedged against the larger freight vehicle. One of the occupants who was trapped inside had sustained critical injuries and had sadly died before medics were able to do anything for him,” he said.

Herbst said that two others had been pinned in the wreckage.

“Firefighters from Richards Bay were also in attendance and they used hydraulic rescue tools, including the Jaws of Life, to cut the wounded from the twisted metal.

“Two patients with serious injuries were stabilised by advanced life support before being transported to a local hospital,” he said.
