Cape Town - Retired Cape Town doctor Cyril Karabus has been hit with yet another glitch ahead of his planned return to South Africa.

EWN reported on Wednesday that the date on his United Arab Emirates visa is incorrect, and he won't be able to leave until this is rectified.

"The South African consulate in Abu Dhabi tells us that the date on the visa is incorrect. This has set us back as they've gone back to the prison to sort that out. Without the correct date on the visa, he's not going to be able to get through airport customs," his lawyer, Michael Bagraim, told EWN.

There is still a chance he will be able to leave Dubai early on Thursday morning and return home to Cape Town later that same day.

Karabus received his passport on Tuesday and started making arrangements for his return.

Karabus, 78, has spent the last nine months in the UAE after being arrested while travelling through Dubai. He was sentenced in absentia for the death of a young patient he treated while working in the UAE in 2002. He was acquitted on 21 March, but his return has been delayed due to administrative issues.
