Cape Town - Retired doctor Cyril Karabus has received his passport and is in the process of arranging a flight back home to South Africa, according to reports on Tuesday.

EWN reported that the South African embassy in the United Arab Emirates is now in possession of Karabus's passport, and he could be home on Thursday.

His lawyer Michael Bagraim confirmed the news to Jacaranda FM.

Karabus, 78, has spent the last nine months in the UAE after being arrested while travelling through Dubai. He was sentenced in absentia for the death of a young patient he treated while working in the UAE in 2002. He was acquitted on 21 March, but his return has been delayed due to administrative issues.
