Pretoria - A police constable appeared in court on Monday facing attempted murder charges after he fired shots and injured a woman constable, Western Cape police said.

The Leeu Gamka Magistrate's Court postponed the trial of Graham Wicomb, 26, to Thursday. He will remain in custody.

"Wicomb was arrested on Friday after shooting at his off-duty police counterpart in the parking lot of a hostel in Aalwyn Street," said Captain Bernadine Steyn.

"The suspect, who was also off-duty, parked his Toyota Tazz next to her and approached her on foot."

He allegedly used his official firearm to shoot at the victim, damaging the door on the driver's side. The victim sustained graze wounds to both her legs, Steyn said.

"He then took her out of the vehicle and allegedly fired another shot but it did not hit her. He took her to a nearby barbeque area to talk to her".

The injured constable has been discharged from hospital.

Steyn said internal police investigations were underway, and Wicomb's firearm was taken for forensic tests.
