Kebble death political: Leon

Cape Town - Mining magnate Brett Kebble's death was "a shocking event" and a political dynamic could evolve from the killing, says official opposition leader Tony Leon.

Speaking from a Johannesburg hotel, the Democratic Alliance leader said:

"It is a shocking event. It is a terrible way to die. I extend condolences to his family. . . it must be very difficult for them at this time."

He said Kebble was "very political . . . he had a lot of political influence and sought it from certain factions in the (ruling) African National Congress."

"I believe there will be a (political) dimension and dynamic which will flow from this event. But perhaps it is too early to comment on that."

The leader of the newly established National Democratic Convention Ziba Jiyane said that it is a sign of the times. "No one is safe from the rampant criminality gripping our country," he said.

Asked whether he believed the death could have political connections, Jiyane said that was his fear. Kebble had worked with the youth league of the African National Congress and important stakeholders in the ruling party, said Jiyane.

Kebble, an art patron, was shot dead at about 21:00 on Tuesday night on his way to a dinner engagement. He was shot in Atholl-Oaklands road in his Mercedes Benz vehicle in Johannesburg.
