Durban – A pre-school teacher was stabbed to death and
her throat slit in front of her pupils on her way to school, a report by IOL said
on Monday.
Zandile Gumede, 41, a teacher at Solwazi Creche in
KwaMduku was attacked while walking to school with some of her pupils last
Wednesday.
The pupils, some as young as 3-years-old, alerted Gumede's
relatives to the crime. They were crying hysterically and had to be calmed down
before they could talk.
Gumede, who had taught at the crèche for a year, had left
for work with pupils, who are her neighbours’ children, at around 06:30.
"One of the older kids, who is 5-years-old, told us that
a man was following them," Vukani Sibiya, Gumede’s nephew told IOL.
"My aunt had asked
the man if she could help him as he had been following them and he said he was
looking for his sheep," Sibiya said.
Gumede continued walking and was then attacked.
"The kids said the man attacked my aunt with a knife from
behind. He stabbed her several times," he said.
Struggling
Distressed relatives found Gumede’s body at the scene.
"She had so many stab wounds and her throat had been
slit."
Sibiya said the family were struggling to come to terms
with her death. Gumede had four children.
"Having to explain to them how their mother died was the
most difficult part," he said.
Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Jay Naicker, said
a 32-year-old woman was charged with murder and is due to appear in Obonjeni
Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Police would not reveal how the woman was linked to the
case. It is believed a man was responsible for killing Gumede.
