Pretoria - Horrific details have emerged about the night a Bronkhorstspruit man killed his wife, tried to kill their three children and then committed suicide.
Beeld reported
that Eugene Marais, 51, had been given seven death sentences 20 years ago after
an attack on a Putco bus in KwaZulu-Natal. The sentence was later commuted to
25 years imprisonment.
The former AWB member only served a few years in jail before
applying for and being granted amnesty from the Truth and Reconciliation
Commission (TRC) for the attack, which he claimed was politically motivated.
While in prison, he met his wife Tania, 39, who was visiting
someone else.
On Thursday evening, he assaulted and then stabbed his wife
to death and gave their three children drinks laced with sleeping pills.
His 11-year-old daughter apparently tried to stop the attack
on her mother and later pretended to drink the concoction.
She managed to get out of the house and ran 5km to get help.
Her 5-year-old sister and 4-year-old brother were then taken
to hospital and their stomachs were pumped. They were then taken to their
grandparents.
At the time of the incident, Marais and his wife had
apparently been separated and in the process of getting divorced.
