Killer uncle abandons bail bid

Cape Town - The case against a man accused of stabbing to death his 2-year-old niece in Nyanga was postponed by the Athlone Magistrate's Court, in Cape Town, on Monday, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.

Spokesperson Eric Ntabazilila said Sidwell Mzimkhulu, 38, had abandoned his bail application and would appear again on July 24.

The toddler was left in the care of her 12-year-old sister on April 14 while their mother attended a funeral. Mzimkhulu allegedly sent the older girl to the shop and disappeared with the toddler.

When their mother could not find them, she forced open the door of Mzimkhulu's shack and found the girl's body wrapped in a blanket under the bed. A bloodstained knife was also found in the shack.

Ntabazilila said people protested outside the court against the crime.
