Kimberley - Residents of Kimberley are mopping up after a violent cloudburst hit the city on Tuesday afternoon, with over 100mm of rain falling in less than an hour.

The Diamond Fields Advertiser reported that the cloudburst resulted in mayhem and chaos, with homes, businesses and even the city's malls being flooded in ankle-deep water.

Motorists tried to escape the hail by taking shelter in parking lots or under cover.

The downpour also caused a fault at a mini substation in Galeshewe, resulting power outages in a number of suburbs.

According to Netwerk24, a woman barely escaped after her new vehicle was submerged in a subway.

Suzette Smith was driving her new Ford Ecosport when the water started to rise and her engine cut off. She managed to start the vehicle and it crashed into the side of the bridge.

She realised she was in trouble and managed to climb out through the passenger window. An army corporal came to her rescue and helped her retrieve her bag and shoes from the vehicle, which then disappeared under the water. It was later pulled out.

No rain is forecast for Wednesday.
