Kindergarten teacher put 19 kids in car

2012-10-12 09:33

Pretoria - A kindergarten teacher was fined by Pretoria metro police for transporting 19 toddlers in her car for an outing to a local Spur restaurant.

Melanie Minnie was pulled over by metro police after a worried member of the community saw the children spill out of Minnie’s Renault Clio in the parking lot of a local mall, reported Beeld.

The children were between the ages of 4 and 6.

“It was the first time that we went on an outing. And the last time,” said Minnie, who had clearly got a huge fright.

“I will never do it again. We are really a very nice crèche,” she said.

Rietfontein crèche was only about 1km from the shopping centre.

A metro police spokesperson said Minnie was fined for transporting more people in a car than it was able to seat.

Her car was able to seat five adults or one adult and eight toddlers.

Minnie was fined R1 500.

What this so called lady was thinking or doing? Playing a public taxi driver? In any case reminds me of a story how 14 illegals, including a driver were trying to cross the border being stuffed into in a KIA Sportage.

      sanda.mnyazi - 2012-10-12 10:07

Had that car been in an accident, can you imagine the devastation of 19 families. This was just irresponsible and i hope she never does it again.

      BulletProof. - 2012-10-12 10:28

@Cliford if was a black Taxi he will bribe the cops and get away without paying the fine any way, she paid the fine and accept the guilt.

      ryan.viljoen.39 - 2012-10-12 10:41

Is she out of her mind? Taking 19 toddlers to Spur! That would be absolute chaos. My worst nightmare. Oh yeah, and driving them there was a bad idea too.....

      harley.quin.334 - 2012-10-12 10:43

@clifford, see boet you could not possibly fit that many people into YOUR car since the chip on your shoulder takes up 90% of the available space

What people will do for a Spur Hunga Busta Burger!!!

      christian.kapp.31 - 2012-10-12 10:03

I recently returned to SA after a long spell away, and to my utter disappointment found that the legendary Hunga Busta Burgers are no more - they have been replaced by double burgers. AG NEE!!!

      sean.otto.9 - 2012-10-12 10:28

Not the Burgers boet , it's those lekker Buffalo wings lol

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-10-12 11:09

Christian, they are one and the same. Only a few "double burgers" are listed, but you can actually order any one. The other day I complained about the absence of a bacon & guacamole hunga busta, and they made me one even though it's not listed as a double. Same price as the other double burgers.

Ya, I'm sure she meant well. That wouldn't cut it for me though. I'd expect a little bit more common sense to be used, especially when being entrusted with other people's kids. I can just shake my head.

  • andrez.kolesky - 2012-10-12 10:24

C'mon guys don't crucify the woman, she obviously did what she thought was a good gesture. Lately we walk around our streets without thinking what may happen. Besides I've seen more people alight from a taxi than it is supposed to carry, which does not make headline news.

      John - 2012-10-12 10:48

Ordinarily I would agree with you. 'Meaning well' is all good and dandy, but she's held to a higher standard because this is her job first of all, and she's entrusted with other people's children. It's not as simple as forgetting to leave the lights on, or locking your keys in your car - nothing as trivial. A while back, a parent left her baby in the car to quickly go buy something. In that incident, the temperature rose to 60degrees Celsius and the baby died. You could argue the same thing, " we all make mistakes". Just some 'mistakes' are more costly and takes a little consideration to avoid. If something happened to those kids, then you'd see the bloggers really crucify this woman.

      fiona.fraser.9847 - 2012-10-12 10:48

Andrez, you know what "thought" did??? planted a feather and thought a chicken would grow. Her intentions may have been good, but who in their right mind endanger somebody elses kids that they are entrusted to take care of.... Take the TAXI's out of the equasion... Just because they are stupid enough to do that doen't mean that the teacher should follow suit...??

      proudlysa.proudlysa - 2012-10-12 13:40

Let do the maths. A clio fits 4 passengers she had 19, thus making the overload ratio 4.75. A tax fits 12 passengers, where in the world have you seen 54 passengers alight a taxi....Think before you type

  • christopher.m.lowe - 2012-10-12 10:29

Lol. What a cute story. I praise you as your intentions were good. As for clifford's narrow minded comment, we all know the difference between Taxi drivers and a kindergarden teacher's driving...

  • Jacques - 2012-10-12 10:31

She was thinking: 'We are a really nice creche, yes, but every now and the we turn Clios into Clown Cars. Other than those little lapses we're fine'

  • stitchl - 2012-10-12 10:36

Just to correct the article, the ages of the kids range from 2-6.

  • carolannbaptista - 2012-10-12 10:42

Parents should remove their children from that creche - That woman is irresponsible!

  • fiona.fraser.9847 - 2012-10-12 10:45

It doen't matter that the kindergarten teachers heart was in the "right" place, her common sense was very obviously not working, and even if it was only 1km to the Spur, proper transportation should have been organised. She needlessly endangered herself and the kids. Its hard enough looking after 2 toddlers who are rambunctious, let alone a Clio full of 19 excited little hyperactive kiddies... Think before you act, even if your "heart" was in the right place, your brain was very obviously still asleep and not functioning. That's before you even take into account the terror that these parents will feel and the mistrust that you have now cloaked your "lovely creche" with.???

  • njglen - 2012-10-12 10:47

Seriously, Allowed to carry 1 adult and 8 toddlers!!!! The car is not a mini van, and surely there are not 9 seat belts, let alone space for child card seats.

  • sarah.ashwell.1 - 2012-10-12 10:56

Seriously?! And she's a teacher too. Very scary. How on earth did she think she was going to manage 19 children alone in a public place. Did she even get permission from the parents? Which parents would be stupid enough to give permission for someone to transport 19 children in a 5 seater car? And the comment at the end makes no sense either 'her car was able to carry 5 adults or 1 adult and 8 toddlers'. Really? Does it suddenly and magically dpawn extra seats and seatbelts when children get in? It's a Clio, not exactly a big car. Crikey,I wish they would name the school,I'd love to write a formal complaint letter to them. And honestly, for a 1st outing she couldn't think of anything better than Spur? Shocking.

      stitchl - 2012-10-12 11:27

The school did send out permission slips for the parents to sign for the spur outing, but the parents were not informed the kids would be transported in A CLIO.... the parents FOUND OUT ABOUT THIS READING THE PAPER THIS MORNING. . . You can't image how we feel.

      natalie.kalamoudacos - 2012-10-12 13:22

@stitchl - What were the parents told about the method of transportation? Did any of you ask?

      alison.langan - 2012-10-12 13:31

Did the parents not ASK how their kids would be transported??????

      natalie.kalamoudacos - 2012-10-12 13:59

@stitchl - This incident happened yesterday and you only found out about it today. What is going on at that school? I'm sorry, but you seem to be wanting sympathy that this happened to your child. As I mentioned elsewhere here, the parents are equally negligent.

      stitchl - 2012-10-12 14:31

I do not need or want anyones sympathy, you are right we should have asked, i was planning to yesterday and am the helling with myself for not because I thought a mini buss would have organised but I still feel the school should have notified the parents that they did not have suitable transportation and we would have all stepped in to help, considering that alot of the kids parents work at moot police station, I guess I didn't even consider that something like this would have happened.

      natalie.kalamoudacos - 2012-10-12 15:13

@stitchl - I know I was being hard on you. It's just that I wish parents would be more careful. I don't know the area, and if this is the only school availble to parents, then you don't have much choice. If this is the case, the school will probably never organise an outing again due to the bad publicity. If this teacher is not the owner/principle of the school, then equal blame (if not more) should be placed on them as well. The safest option is to have the "outings" come to the school. There are clown, magic, animal, puppet, educational shows for example that could be held at the school. We get a price per child, plus the organisation's transportation costs and divide it amongst all the children. Children are safe and it is much more fun than an outing to the Spur. If an outing is arranged, ensure that the school has a list of parents willing to help with transport (I wouldn't use a minibus as most don't have seatbelts). Each parent is allocated their own child to transport and any other children that can be buckled-up only. Not enough transport to allow each child to be buckled = no outing.

  • Hemlock - 2012-10-12 11:07

A nice creche - maybe. A responsible creche - NO WAY! You should be closed down for putting 19 small children at risk. You are an IDIOT!!!!!! If my granddaughter was in your car I would have laid charges again both you and the creche!

  • natalie.kalamoudacos - 2012-10-12 11:15

What a stupid, stupid woman! If you are planning an outing, ask parents to help with lifts. As for the parents, surely they were aware of the outing, did they not bother to ask how the children would be transported? Negligence from both sides. You are not qualified to look after children, their safety goes hand in hand with their education. Shame on you!

  • irma.white.9 - 2012-10-12 12:09

If was only one km away, why couldn't they have walked? I remember in pre school our teachers would walk us to a shop a few blocks away to buy biltong.

      stitchl - 2012-10-12 12:20

They didn’t walk, because the kids age between 2 and 6, and also because 4 of Moots main busiest road are between the school and the spur. And they would have to cross 18 avenue and Francine Street, 2 extremely busy roads

      irma.white.9 - 2012-10-12 14:21

Stitchl, thanks. Don't know the area at all so don't know if the roads are busy or not.

  • geraldsebanda - 2012-10-12 12:38

Nice creche huh? After this I don't think the parents will agree with her.

  • dulyate - 2012-10-12 13:48

This lady was crazy. If I had kids in that creche, would wonder what else they had gotten away with, without being caught. In an case, if she wanted to take 19 kids to Spur, she should have asked the parents for help/money, and at least transported them in the right vehicle.

  • candiese.marnewick - 2012-10-12 15:08
