Johannesburg - A man has been arrested for abducting and murdering a schoolboy in Knysna, Western Cape police said on Monday.

The 51-year-old man was arrested on Sunday in connection with the disappearance and death of 11-year-old Zama Mani, from Khayalethu, Captain Malcolm Pojie aid in a statement.

Police launched a search on Friday night after the boy's mother reported him missing.

"Initial reports reveal that the boy went to the Fraaisig Primary School early that morning. Later, it was established that he never attended classes for the day," said Pojie.

It was believed that the man had lured Mani away that morning.

Further investigation and video footage led police to the man's house where he had been taken into custody by members of the community.

The man led police to dense bush near Howard Street, where Mani's fully clothed body was found.

There was a shoelace around his neck.

The man is expected to appear in the Knysna Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
