Koeberg shut down for repairs

2011-10-29 21:20

Cape Town - Koeberg nuclear power station has been shut down for repairs, Eskom said on Saturday.

Unit 2 of the station was shut down on Friday night.

"The shutdown is to enable repairs to be undertaken on the unit's generator...it is on the non-nuclear part of the power station and does not involve the reactor or nuclear fuel," it said.

During repairs on the generator, the nuclear reactor would be kept in a safe shut down condition.

Eskom said the shutdown would last a number of weeks.

The shutdown was not expected to affect electricity supply.

In September, Koeberg unit 2 was shut down by a protection system on a motor while unit one was in full operation.
