Cape Town – Axed Democratic Alliance Member of Parliament Dianne Kohler Barnard has not lodged a formal appeal with the party yet.

Party spokesperson Phumzile van Damme told News24 on Saturday the MP had 10 days to appeal the decision to terminate her membership.

“No formal appeal has been lodged with the party as far I’m aware.”

Kohler Barnard told Netwerk24 via SMS on Friday night that she intended to appeal the decision.

Her membership of the party was terminated after the former DA police shadow minister shared a Facebook post from journalist Paul Kirk, praising former apartheid president PW Botha.

The post, which Kohler Barnard said she did not read fully before sharing, said: “Please come back PW Botha - you were far more honest than any of these [African National Congress] rogues, and you provided a far better service to the public.”

In September, she pleaded guilty to misconduct, bringing the party into disrepute and not abiding by the party’s social media policy.

The termination of Kohler Barnard’s membership was announced following a Federal Executive meeting on Friday night.

Kohler Barnard did not respond to calls for comment on Saturday.

The DA on Friday also terminated MP Juanita Terblanche’s party membership, for alleged misappropriation of funds in the North West, her constituency.

Van Damme said Terblanche’s internal appeal had been dismissed and she now had 10 days to take the decision on judicial review.
