Johannesburg - An alleged car thief is lying in a hospital bed under police guard after stealing a car in Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg, and then shooting at police, who were pursuing him, Kagiso police said on Saturday.

Spokesperson Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said the man and his two accomplices had allegedly stolen three vehicles in Krugersdorp on Saturday morning around 10:00. Police were alerted and pursued the trio.

"One of them lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a police car and a shoot-out ensued between him and the police," Sibiya said.

The shooting took place in Kagiso, extension 12. None of the police officers were injured, Sibiya said.

The other two robbers fled the scene in the other vehicles and were still at large.
