Johannesburg - The KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg has handed life sentences to two men found guilty of rape, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said the men were sentenced on Monday, after they were convicted of a rape and robbery in Maphumulo in August 2010.

"Siyabonga Mathebula, 24, and Sifiso Malunga, 19, [received] life imprisonment each for rape, 15 years for house robbery and 10 years for kidnapping," said Zwane.

Police were still searching for a third man implicated in the crime.

Zwane said the raped woman had been visiting her boyfriend's house when they were attacked.

The three men broke into the house as they slept.

"They allegedly assaulted her boyfriend and took a HiFi system, DVDs and clothing and left the house with the woman," said Zwane.

She was taken to nearby bushes where she was repeatedly raped by all of them.

The accused were caught by community members two days after the crime was committed and handed over to police.

The group escaped from police custody shortly thereafter.

Malunga and Mathebula were re-captured after they raped another woman in the Umzinto area in February.

"The two will still face an Umzinto rape case," said Zwane.
