Durban - The department of education in KwaZulu-Natal has dismissed five teachers for hitting pupils in the last 20 months, the Mercury reported on Friday.
One was given a final warning and the department was investigating two others for misconduct.
Provincial education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said officials believed this was the "tip of the iceberg".
"Learners and parents tend to report cases only where learners were seriously injured. We know corporal punishment is rife and that parents are unaware of their rights," Mahlambi was quoted as saying in the Mercury.
According to the paper more than 70 departmental staff including principals and departmental heads were facing disciplinary hearings for a number of offences, including mismanaging schools accounts, faking qualifications, assault and rape.
