The cancer remains dormant thanks to medication - Mpho

Tutu has battled prostate cancer for more than a decade. 

In December last year, he had to cancel an appearance at the launch of his legacy foundation project and handover of a children’s playroom at Tygerberg Hospital.

Tutu's hospitalisation has made headlines around the world, with social media awash with well wishes for the Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

France24, Sky News, Al Jazeera, Central China Television and The Guardian all carried stories of Tutu being admitted to hospital. CBS News, The New York Times, The Washington Post and many other broadcasters and newspapers also covered the news.

Mpho officiated at her parent's renewal of their wedding vows less than two weeks ago as they celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu was hospitalised on Tuesday for a persistent infection in Cape Town.

Tutu's foundation did not give details about his illness but his daughter Mpho said they hoped he will "be able to return home in a day or two".
