Johannesburg - The Law Society of SA (LSSA) has elected Black Lawyers' Association (BLA) vice president Kathleen Matolo-Dlepu and attorney David Bekker as its new co-chairs.

Both placed finalising the legal practice bill high on their agenda for their term as co-chairs, the LSSA said in a statement on Monday.

The LSSA said its main objective was to bring about new legislation to regulate the legal profession.

According to the LSSA, Bekker had said he would like to finalise the issue, with special emphasis on smaller law firms and access to legal practitioners for rural communities.

"My secondary objective is to improve and develop ubuntu between the different constituents of the LSSA, so as to serve as an example to all of the role that attorneys play in building a unified nation in a diverse community," it quoted him as saying.

Matolo-Dlepu had said she planned to encourage women lawyers to actively participate in the affairs of the legal profession and to encourage the mentorship of young lawyers.

The two will be co-chairs until March next year.
