Leave politics out of Marikana - bishop

2012-08-23 14:31

Rustenburg - People should not seek to score political points from last week's mine violence in Marikana, Anglican Archbishop Thabo Makgoba told a memorial service on Thursday.

"These are God's people, we need to respect the dignity and sanctity of their lives," he said.

A few men, introduced as community leaders, were invited to sit on the stage in a marquee erected for the service to honour the dead miners in Marikana.

When a leader from the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) arrived with a group of men, some carrying sticks, the crowd started murmuring and whispering.

Thirty-four people were killed and 78 injured when police shot at striking workers at Lonmin's mine last Thursday. Another 10 people were killed in violent protests the preceding week.

The protests were believed to be linked to rivalry between the National Union of Mineworkers and the Amcu over recognition agreements at the mine.

Several political leaders attended the service. Expelled ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema was seen holding hands with United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa and suspended ANCYL secretary general Sindiso Magaqa.

The mourners were asked to hold hands during a prayer to show their unity. Praying for the injured, a priest said: "Heal us as well." He and several other clerics took turns in leading the service in prayer.

As this continued, some mourners closed their eyes, some held onto each other, others held hands.

Photographers and reporters also held hands.

Those in attendance included Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa, Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, Co-operative Governance Minister Richard Baloyi, North West Premier Thandi Modise and Rustenburg Mayor Mpho Khonou.

My condolences to the families of all those lost at Marikana to all black south africans: please note that news24 readers are not an accurate portrayal of how white south africans feel. They are a concentrated group of whinging idiots who miss the old south africa and could never afford to immigrate. IF YOU ARE A RACIST, WHAT ARE YOU DOING LIVING IN SOUTH AFRICA??...IF YOU HAVE NO SYMPATHY FOR THE 34 PEOPLE SHOT DEAD BY POLICE, THEN IM SORRY, BUT YOU ARE A RACIST!!! To news24 readers in general:most of you are far from being as intelligent as you think you are. In fact the highest form of ignorance has to be the individual who thinks they are much smarter than they are and is blind to their own lack of foresight. i cannot stand whites who think they are smarter than blacks because they use better english and have a bigger vocabulary.. haha..so pathetic. and im white, and i can tell you my intelligence penis is much longer and stronger than yours, but i only use it to f**k up small minds like you. Please do not mistake ignorance from black people as being racially based, when in fact its the result of extreme poverty, lack of education, and having a home language that is as foreign to English as Chinese...(ever heard a Chinese person speak English?) Please show some respect to all those lost at Marikana - as much as you think you know about their lives (which you know very little) consider the desperation which would necessitate charging a group of police with AKs

      loo.steyn - 2012-08-23 14:51

Oh ... Ok ... erm just tell me one thing ... why do you write a thesis at the same people you call morons .. You the chosen one ? . .Why dont you show some respect for the families the mob killed .. WITHOUT facing Ak's

      mario.dippenaar - 2012-08-23 15:01

... Intelligence ... Penis? Is that where your brain is?

      sauvignon.blanc.31 - 2012-08-23 15:03

erm ok meneer steyn, i said my condolences to all those who lost their lives, including security and police. you see? this is exactly what I am talking about. people who think they know but who just fumble around blindly and end up looking stupid. My 'thesis' im posting as a general message to all news24 readers, on multiple articles on news24 about marikana. basically so it is known that not every white person in this country is a heartless idiot. call me a bleeding heart liberal, but seeing 34 people shot down by police with aks is disturbing no matter what the events prior to that were. stop rationalizing and politicizing everything and be a bladdy human being with a sliver of a heart. i know you dont live in the townships, go try live where those people live for a week, i bet your whole views on life in south africa for impoverished people will change. and you mite find yourself at the front line of the next protest

      thando.mokoena.167 - 2012-08-23 15:04

I have to agree with you- breadwinners lost their lives. Even if they were stupid for charging at police but people lost their lives. We need more White people like you. Let me tell you this- we the Black people do see the corruption and we hate it> Some people choose not to vote because as much as Helen is trying to unite SA, the racist comments or White people that continue calling us names are not helping at all. They are costing DA votes.

      sauvignon.blanc.31 - 2012-08-23 15:05

derpyherpes - u clearly didnt get the analogy, lets keep it simple: if you dont have anything intelligent to say rather stay quiet... and if you have nothing sympathetic to say for the lives lost at Marikana, rather also stay quiet. just generally - keep quiet

      Jason - 2012-08-23 15:08

AK's???? where were there AK's??? Blanc you have no idea about the socio economic problems facing this country. Those criminals died because they disobeyed the law and threatened the lives of the Cops. But trying to explain this to a Troll like you is impossible. Yawn!

      cecil.stevenson.3 - 2012-08-23 15:10

Spot on again sauv!!! These white bigots r A disgrace!!! All they c is colour instead of greed!!! They cant understand that it was the poor who happen to also b black !! Who were trying to fight a captialst system to earn a lil bit more money!!! So they could have a lul bit of a better life!!! 44 people were lost over greed and foreign interest!!! Its disgusting!!! Ppl of any race religion and creed r far more valuable than money!!! WAKE WHITE SOUTH AFRICA we need to unite and accept our differences!!

      andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-08-23 15:14

      loo.steyn - 2012-08-23 15:15

The problem is dude, we differ fundamentally. I do not give a rats ass about a murderous mob being killed. I further do not feel remorse foe the families of murderers as deep down I know they are better of without the murderous bastards. The way I see it , the kids of these murderers that CLEARLY wanted to kill people/police will not be raised with the attitude of " If you are not happy ,, kill people" and I don't care how upset they were about union and or wage issues. So yes dude . .I feel NOOOTHING for the mob. Why ? Because a murderer must be killed to make this country a better place to live . .FULL stop.

      mantothieve.missingman - 2012-08-23 15:15

Aag please are you going to put your little story in all your posts ?Why not publish it in the government gazzete as well , maybe the anc promiss you a free house too !

      BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-08-23 15:20

sauvignon.blanc.31: I think you have proven beyond any doubt with your absurd drivel that you are the one with a small mind, and I would encourage you to please not speak with authority on behalf of other people. You further prove with your absurd comment that it is in fact you who doesn't seem to know much on these matters, so again, please do not try and speak with any authority - you are clearly a raving lunatic. Thank you

      sauvignon.blanc.31 - 2012-08-23 15:27

bigchiefplumbingasscrack - just saying i dont know wat im talking about does not make it so...once again, people just assuming that because the people around them think like they do, they must be right. that doesnt make you intelligent or an original thinker, that makes you just another sheep in the herd of blind fools following the blind fools in front of them

      ronel.kotze.3 - 2012-08-23 15:34

I agree with you Sauvignon...The incident is tragic and we really dont know what happened..I read the article on praag.org..it just prove how many facts are hidden from the public, how the media is manipulated AND the people make uniformed "rude" comment, if some one who has a different viewpoint, a viewpoint might be well researched. I feel for the families of ALL 44 victims, and pray that this will never happen in South Africa again....

      sauvignon.blanc.31 - 2012-08-23 15:34

jasoneye - were they not AKs? oopps are you going to educate me oh wise one with your deep knowledge of socioeconomic theories and military weaponry? please do. calling me a troll and trying to using words like socioeconomic and then not putting your accusations in context does nothing to deflate my arguments. go ask your gardenboy or your maid who actually may live in similar conditions to those miners or even the security guards or police who were killed, ask them if they feel the police were in the right to kill 34 people.. or is their opinion meaningless to you?

      sauvignon.blanc.31 - 2012-08-23 15:41

mantothieve - you are just clearly stupid so im not even going to reply to you.... meneer steyn - you just proved my point entirely - you dont care. you just label those killed as a murderous mob. do you see the entire black populous as a murderous mob? those people had wives and families and perhaps justifiably, perhaps not, they were angry and felt taken advantage of. they were expressing that, perhaps in the wrong ways some of them, but what i saw was still a bunch of cops with big guns taking aim and shooting at a crowd of people who mostly, with the excepetion of one or two, just had pangas. in my book thats not a fair fight, and reminds me of sharpville or some other ugly event in our dark past. we have potential in this country to be more than this , to show the world what true tolerance can be, but it is not easy, and with the widest gap between rich and poor in the world, it never will be. i just wish we could all keep trying and not condemn this country to hell. or if you insist on doing that, then immigrate to oz

      bob.mcmillen.564 - 2012-08-23 15:43

blank31, an outsider, not knowing the facts, would find your writings very believable, however if those same outsiders were given all the facts then they would realise the rubbish you write, two police officers were hacked to death by this mob, they charged police officers armed with guns and Pangas with the intention of killing more police officers, and you have the nerve to condemn the response, what would you have the police do, turn the other cheek ? wake up to reality, maybe this tragic loss of life will educate others not to ignore or disregard police who were there to keep the peace, opening fire was their last resort given the risk to their lives.

      BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-08-23 15:53

sauvignon. CORKED Blanc.31 Definitely a raving lunatic. How old are you? Just asking because your comments, besides being completely uninformed are very juvenile. Have you ever been in situations such as what happened in Marikana? Have you ever faced a crowd that have been worked up for the 'kill'. Please grow up. Do you know anything about public violence at all?

      sauvignon.blanc.31 - 2012-08-23 15:57

hey bob - i got news for you - your an outsider in your own country. the vast majority of this country by far is poor and non-white. i know the facts of marikana, and my message is forget who is right or wrong, the insensitivity displayed by the majority of news24 readers towards the families of those who died is inexcusable. violence begets violence. those protesters were not right to slaughter those policemen. the final score was horribly uneven. as in israel, when you have poor people armed with pangas, rocks, or a gun or two, versus the state with all its resources and weaponry, its not a fair fight. no matter which way you flip the coin. who decided it was time for live ammo. and who are these sick news24 reeaders who justify that decision, even celebrate it! disgusting..an eye for an eye makes bob blind...have some respect for those people who died, all of them, whether cop or miner, they all earn a fraction of what you do bob...people in glass mansions should keep quiet and pay respect

      dee.980 - 2012-08-23 16:09

Bravo Sauvignon!!! We need more like you posting at this site.

      sauvignon.blanc.31 - 2012-08-23 16:11

hey big chief, read wat i say about not commenting on whose right or wrong but instead showing some sensitivity for those who died. you think i dont know that cops are afraid? you tthnink im not aware that they shoot and act out of fear for their lives? that does not excuse their actions. they maybe were acting out of self preservation. but tell me chief plumber, does that make it a fair fight? if you were demonstrating becuase you felt the company you worked for were shortchanging you, and you were out with sticks and pangas, do you feel like you would have a fighting chance against the state armed with big guns? this is not an isolated african incident. labour unions (of white people) in first world countries have been through the same thing with police and have been subjected to extreme force from the police and beaten into submission, with the police claiming they acted in self defense becuase they were afraid for their lives (and they may well have been). just in south africa, the police open fire with live ammo and murder 30 people, and white people defend them and celebrate. wtf is that??? the majority of people in england during the thatcher years hated thatcher and supported the unions. why the heck is s.a among white people becoming such a bastion of right wing conservatism. is it becuase as the ANC continues to make a mess of things whites are harking on the 'good ol days'and using misgovernment as an excuse to justify their racism?

      bob.mcmillen.564 - 2012-08-23 16:23

blanc, I am a resident of this country and as such am not an outsider, all I am saying is there is a right way and wrong way of handling work grievances, murdering police officers and charging police officers armed with weapons is clearly not the way to go about it, like many in this country I have many issues I don't agree with, that doesn't mean I go around murdering police officers and threatening people. I don't blame the police for this tragedy, I think the blame lays with those responsible for inciting this violence, probably the union leaders.

      BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-08-23 16:29

Dee - no really Dee we don't. We need people to make comment based on facts, common sense and logic. Not emotional bleeding heart soap box outbursts from the lunatic fringe. I certainly don't celebrate death of any sort, and I've said so in previous posts for all to see. But don't play the crying game either when a charged up crowd move toward the police armed to the teeth. Please try and be unbiased at least. If you're not, just say you support the miners, full stop. No but, oohs and aahs, just say you believe the miners were 100% right, SAPS 100% wrong and stop sitting on the fence playing with words, preaching to everyone from the soap box with this false authoritative and condescending attitude. (the last @ that corked wine fellow)

      bernard.ingram - 2012-08-23 16:40

@sorry.white-ass. Freaking thundering hell, don't we have a massive chip on our shoulder! Don't stereotype me into your crap argument. You do not have my permission for that. If you take on the police, then you deserve to die. Simple really. Those same animals hacked policemen to death. Are you saying the police should have done nothing and just let he mob kill them? It has nothing to do with colour smart ass, but everything with crime. Yes, I feel sorry for those living in poverty, but that does not mean you must turn to crime. I grew up in poverty...yes I did, but I made the most of the straws that were thrown my side. Everyone can rise above their circumstance. Problem is the average (not everyone) poor man in SA is too lazy and is waiting for cANCer to hand it to them on a plate. Also, your rhetorical "immigrate to..." is old and overused. And I did not emigrate, before you start that false accusation. Man, you are totally out of your league! Go play with your toys now, and be in bed by 8pm like a good boy. PS, please don't insult good wine! Choose another name.

      kala.bafazi - 2012-08-23 16:53

Sauvignon Blanc - Good name for a whiner. I happen to have photos of the 2 policeman that were killed by the miners. Give me your e-mail and I'll send them to you, baring in mind that they are extremely graphic and shows how violently they died. The intention of the miners towards the police was pretty clear by the way they armed themselves. The argument is NOT about whites having no sympathy for the black miners it's about people NOT having sympathy with those who break the law, and there are laws governing strike action. Incidently this was an illegal strike. So if your sympathies lie with the criminals, their situations not withstanding, then that's fine with me but please don't come here with your bleeding heart unfounded accusations.

It just amazes me hoe the media still uses Propaganda!!!! And everything is about the miners that lost their lives.... And the miners who were injured.... Did anyone report on the particulars on why they were shot at with live amo in the end?!?!?!? The Police DID use tear gas and rubber bullets.... And had to stand by and watch their brothers in arms being hacked to death buy people, who i wouldnt even condiser part of the human race, with mashetes and in groups of 50!!!! Maybe the media should at the little tid bits in, and the real picture can get shown across the world!!! Instead of our Police force being slammed for "their violent actions". Yes they arent always on the starught and narrow, but in the case, they had every right to protect themselves as they did.

      loo.steyn - 2012-08-23 15:03

I agree .... If you kill people expect to be killed .. I hope the ones that killed their colleagues , the 2 security guards and the two policemen were killed in the shooting too ... if they were spared . .the police's good work is not done yet in this instance.

sauvignon.blanc.31 This is not about white people being what you describe them to be. Some of us a as dark as you can want a black man to be and we still say our hearts out! The government gave instruction to police to shoot people at Marekana! Am saying that as a black man, The government is driven by a ruling party which happen to be a black man's party. Does that make you feel better? Are we suppose to be convinced they are feeling for the dead? Why did they not realise before the killing that killing people is wrong? Did they not learn the lesson in Ficksburg when Mr Tatane was killed. Well learning a lesson is associated with education which this government is against! A lot more is still to happen. This was a message sent clear to all South African's "Anyone who want to stand up against us, will perish". Sorry government, message sent loud and clear. We will never move away from your aly union, neither shall we vote against you in the next elections because you will kill us and build our wives RDP houses, and send our children to school!

  • neville.chamberlain.509 - 2012-08-23 15:32

Bishop, hate to tell you this but you are a bit late. Being the consumate opportunists every politician has already politicised this - one would swear there is an election just around the corner. Even the ACDP, who usually doesn't have much to say about anything, got stuck in to have a little dig at the ANC and the SAPS. Cheap politicking from Tellytubby (with Vlooitjie in tow) and Showa was to be excpected but then Dene Smuts and Dianne Kohler Barnard showed exactly why white Afrikaners don't trust them - having a stupid dig at the Boeremag who, as far as I could tell, had had their behinds chucked in jail about 10 years ago. And every fat cat politician from here to Zanzibar ignored the fact that the miners were just as guilty as everybody else rather opting to try the cheap politicking route and blame the Police.

      kaykay.son.50 - 2012-08-23 15:48

I bet YOU, koos.vandermerwe.75, avatar, nerasmus1, Lee Williams and the likes are still having a party everyday to celebrate the death of guilty people (minors)! They deserved to be shot at, fired from work and taken back to where they belong! Since the police with instruction from the leaders of this country killed these people, that means you and th eruling party are working towards the same goal. To maginalize people so you can use R4000 on gas every month alone! Oh! did avatar lorain.maseko say it is what some white people give their children as pocket money every month. Yes even some of the TOP politicians and ANC members spend so much on Gas and children's pocket money every month. Whoever think that he will strike to earn more than R4000 per month must know that there is a bulet with your name on it. Message sent loud and clear last week. Shame on all the mine owners, NUM, COSATU, ANC and the government!

      neville.chamberlain.509 - 2012-08-23 16:08

Are you on drugs???? Seems like it....oh, and the R 4000.00 myth has by now been disproved and debunked properly.

      kaykay.son.50 - 2012-08-23 21:52

According to the disproving message sent on the net, the minors smoke things like I do! How can they demand R12500 and stand up to dies when they are earning exactly the same amount. The report thwarting the R4000 says their earnings is between R10000 - R11000 (gross) and their take home is way less than that. Now your white man's thinking tells you that these people are fighting for cost to company salary! you got it all wrong. They are fighting for what they will put on the table at the end of the month. Telling a person he is earning R12000 yet he take home R5000 make no sense to his starving family who only see R5000 coming home. get out of that shell. No one demand a gross salary increase in the sence of it. We (black people) focus on what we take home and you may say whatever you want. The fact remains, what I take home is what I will always fight for! Ask your friends (including blacks) and Lonmin's chief executive Ian Farmer, who is currently seriously ill in hospital, collected pay and bonuses of £1.2m last year." to tell you how much gas they are burning in their big machines per month and come tell me I smoke crap!
